Zendala Dare

The Zendala Dare is a weekly challenge that incorporates the principles of mandala's with the technique's used to create a Zentangle inspired piece of art.

Traditionally, mandala's are round symmetrical drawings used to symbolize cultural, religious, and astronomical events.  You can read more about mandala's here.

The templates presented in the Zendala Dare are created by Erin Koetz Olson, CZT.  A new template is available every Saturday morning and a link up is available to post your work for other's to see.

The guidelines for the Zendala Dare are as follows:

  • This is not a contest.  This is simply a way for people to display their artwork in a non-judgmental forum.  Supportive and constructive criticism is appreciated and welcomed.
  • The general directions for completing the Zendala Dare go like this:

    1. Print the template.  The link is located in the blog post.
    2. Fill in the spaces with tangles.  If you are unfamiliar with where to get tangles, I recommend www.zentangle.com or www.tanglepatterns.com.  These are both great resources.
    3. Scan your piece or take a picture of it.
    4. Upload your photo to your blog.  You may also use a  Flickr or Picasa account.
    5. Go to the original post where you found the template and enter the web address of your post into the the Linkey Machine at the bottom of the post.  PLEASE make sure that you enter the specific post address, not the address for the home page of your blog.  All home page post's will be removed.
    6. Wait for lot's of positive feedback!

  • The templates are provided in 3 sizes.  One that will fit a standard Zentangle tile, one that will fit a Zendala Zentangle tile, and one that fit's a standard piece of computer paper.  The full size template varies from week to week and usually runs between 7 and 7.5 inches.  Any of these sizes can be easily modified by pasting them into a word document or other formatting program if needed.
  • The templates provided are for personal use only.  The templates are the property of Erin Koetz Olson and my not be reproduced for sale or use without express written permission.
  • Templates may be used by an artist to create pieces that will then be sold or given as gifts.  Template credit is not required but is appreciated.
  • Certified Zentangle Teacher's do have permission to reprint templates for use in Zentangle classes.  The text portion of the template identifying Erin Koetz Olson, CZT and the Bright Owl Blog must be included on the copy.
  • If you have trouble with the Linkey machine or posting to a blog, Flickr or Picasa account or if you have trouble accessing the templates I am happy to help when I can.  Please realize that I am not the most computer literate person so my computer assistance skills may be limited.  I am a Mac user, so I may be useless to the PC users out there. lol
  • I do not impose a time limit on posting.  You are welcome to post your piece to an old Zendala Dare at any time.

  1. If/when you get a few moments, could you update this list? It's the easiest way to find each dare. Thanks!

  4. Hi Erin -- I can't find the current Zendala dare. Matter of fact, I stopped getting your posts just about the time my computer was hacked right after New Year's. How do I get back on your list? Thanks. My new email address is: emgoodnight71@gmail.com Thanks.

    1. Janice, my blog is very alive and well but I am currently in nursing school and only have time to post the Zendala Dare sporadically until I can fully return at the first of the year.
